The Use of the Word "Good"

The Use of the Word "Good"

Updated: Jun 21, 2020

I love podcasts (as you will learn more of in the future) and one of my favorites is called Jocko Podcast with, of course, Jocko Willink as its lead. Jocko had a 20-year military career as a Navy Seal, Leader and Trainer and currently applies the lessons he learned on the battlefield to civilian life through his company, Echelon Front. He is the author of several books including Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win as well as my favorite, Discipline Equal Freedom: Field Manual.

The word “Good” has become a bit of a catchphrase with Jocko based on his third podcast entitled, JOCKO PODCAST 3: JOCKO & ECHO (THE LAST HUNDRED YARDS [BOOK], JIU JITSU, BOSSES, FAILURE).

In this podcast, Jocko and his partner Echo discuss how to deal with setbacks, failures, delays, defeats, or other disasters. Jocko suggests dealing with all these situations with one word, GOOD. These are his own words as per the podcast:

"Oh, the mission got canceled? Good… We can focus on another one.

Didn’t get the new high-speed gear we wanted? Good…We can keep it simple.

Didn’t get promoted? Good…More time to get better.

Didn’t get funded? Good…We own more of the company.

Didn’t get the job you wanted? Good…Get out and get more experience, and build a better resume.

Got tapped out? Good…It’s better to tap out in training than to tap out on the street. Got beat? Good…You Learned

Unexpected problems? Good…We have the opportunity to figure out a solution.

Got Injured? Good…Needed a break from training."

The last sentence may be my favorite. Of course, I am biased because injuries and returning from injuries are both my passion and my profession.

Injury equals opportunity. Coronavirus 2020 equals opportunity as well. All bad things have a positive aspect.

If you spend time thinking otherwise, you’re moving in the wrong direction. This is your opportunity to get your body in sync. It is a time when you can concentrate on becoming stronger, more athletic and a better human in every aspect of your life.

It is rare that athletes, people in general, have an extended time to just work on their weaknesses, and this time allows them to do so.
