Sugar: Kitchen heroin?

Sugar is the same as heroin…..

Don’t believe me?

Have you ever downed an entire pint of ice cream without thinking twice? That’s at least 1,000 calories and 100g of sugar in one sitting.

Birthday party? No problem. I'll have 6 slices of that cake and ice cream!

Have you ever caught yourself eating ice cream in the middle of the night as a “late night snack”? That’s called giving yourself Diasleepabetes

Sugar addiction is a real thing.

If you don’t believe me then try to quit sugar cold turkey. You’ll have side effects such as anxiety, depressed mood, sleep disturbances, light-headedness, dizziness, nausea, fatigue acutely after cutting sugar out of your diet.

And if you want the evidence based research, here it is:

"In animal studies, sugar has been found to produce more symptoms than is required to be considered an addictive substance. Animal data has shown significant overlap between the consumption of added sugars and drug-like effects, including bingeing, craving, tolerance, withdrawal, cross-sensitisation, cross-tolerance, cross-dependence, reward and opioid effects. Sugar addiction seems to be dependence to the natural endogenous opioids that get released upon sugar intake. In both animals and humans, the evidence in the literature shows substantial parallels and overlap between drugs of abuse and sugar, from the standpoint of brain neurochemistry as well as behaviour."

BOTTOM LINE

Still enjoy your ice cream. Don’t sacrifice a little intermittent fun for your physical health or vanity.

But do it responsibly!

Have things like ice cream, cake and pie as an occasional treat. Clean out your kitchen so that there is no temptation left in the freezer!

Sugar is a drug just like heroin. The first step is to realize this is true and consider that we may have some food addictions.

I know that it’s not exactly like we are shooting up Ben and Jerry’s or breaking into people’s home to steal their ice cream – but its still an addiction that is not good for our health.

If you don't want to do it for yourself, consider eating better for your kids, pets, parents, or significant other.
